metropolis

Last night, the rediscovered and restored version of Fritz Lang's 1927 expressionist science-fiction film Metropolis was broadcast on TV from the Berlin Film Festival, where it was accompanied by the original score performed live by an orchestra.

In the 1920s, the film had been re-cut and re-edited by American film studios to the point of obscuring the plot completely in order to reduce the 153-minute running time down to 90 minutes and to remove parts that were considered controversial or immoral for audiences in America. As a result, much of the cut parts were lost, and it has taken decades to piece and restore the film back to the version that Lang had conceived.

The choreography and visuals of this silent film are amazing, and the technology that it envisioned for the future are, for the most part, accurate and plausible. It has been inscribed in UNESCO's Memory of the World Register, and is definitely worth seeing.

discoveries

"In each century since the beginning of the world, wonderful things have been discovered. In the last century, more amazing things were found out than in any century before. In this new century, hundreds of things still more astounding will be brought to light. At first, people refuse to believe that a strange new thing can be done, then they begin to hope it can't be done, then they see it can be done-- then it is done and all the world wonders why it was not done centuries ago."

paper forest

Yuken Teruya takes mundane objects and make them not only beautiful, but also desirable. toilet paper rolls are usually seen as garbage, but he makes them into objects of art that one would want to have.

there's also a definite feeling of a cycle:
... --> tree --> paper --> tree --> ...

reverse labour

"A phrase from, of all things, a Carrie Fisher novel steadied me after my father died. She described grief as a “reverse labor,” the contractions of which grow further and further apart until finally they stop altogether. Remembering that helped me through the spasms, and also helped me not feel guilty when normality wished to return again."

sirop de poteau

"Québécois sometimes refer to imitation maple syrup as sirop de poteau ("pole syrup"), a joke referring to the syrup as having been made by tapping telephone poles."
